Villaspeciosa - San Platano

Villaspeciosa - San Platano
San Platano seemed to be a very close cousin of Santa Maria di Sibiola, that I had visited near Serdiana, about 20km east. It has the same uncommon, asymetrical layout - and two apses. Erected mid 12th century it belonged as well to the Abbey of St. Victor in Marseille.

The workshop may have completed Santa Maria di Sibiola - and then started the erection of San Platano. But here the workers obviously (re-)used, what they found in nearby Roman ruins. Some of the parts used for the embellishment of the facade are Roman spoliae.

The bell-gable was probably added, when Villaspeciosa was under Spanish rule.

These inlays are typical for the the Southern Auvergne in France (eg. Le Puy en Velay). Maybe a specialist from there accompanied the monks from Marseille.
