Borutta - San Pietro di Sorres
The "Cattedrale di San Pietro di Sorres" is located on an isolated volcanic hill. Erected during the 12th-13th centuries, it was the seat of the now disappeared diocese of Sorres until 1505.
Under Aragonese reign in the 14th century Sorres declined, the village around the church got destroyed. San Pietro di Sorres underwent a very long period of decay, that ended with several restorations in the late 19th century, but even then the church remained abandoned.
In 1947 it was chosen to house a group of Benedictine monks, that in 1974 received the status of abbey.
The facade is richly decorated with geometric inlaid mosaics.
