Since the mid-19th century, Russian nobility visited Nice over the winter. In 1864 Tsar Alexander II visited and was very attracted by the pleasant climate. So a large russian community had settled in Nice end of the 19th century and the Cathedral Saint Nicolas was established. Tsar Nicholas II
funded the construction of the Cathedral, which was inaugurated in December 1912.

There is a dispute about the ownership at the moment. In 2010, a French Court adjudged that the title to the Cathedral should be held by the Russian state. The "association cultuelle" which for the last 80 years has occupied and cared for the property will appeal to a higher court.
