Two Mourning Cloak (or Camberwell Beauty, Nymphalis antiopa. le morio) butterflies. They hibernate through the winter and are the first large butterflies on the wing in Spring. These were feeding on sap escaping form a recently cut tree trunk, there were also several flies also feeding these juices. The one on the top has seen much better days I think.

Good job getting both butterflies together. It is quite a beautiful species.

Hi Ronald, Thanks, yes it was lucky. I think they were drawn by the sugary sap for the cut trunk but whatever the reason they were unusually cooperative!
