BTW ty for the warning about water...molds DID develop and I found this when I was changing to a larger container. Once I got them away from the molds, they all seemed to wake up and were happy again. I will pay close attention.

QUESTION: do they need water at all or do they get all of their moisture from the milkweed leaves?

I have a piece of paper towel in there which is wet but most of the water is squeezed out. I wanted them to have some humidity in there. Should I remove it? They are crawling around on it today, are they getting water from it do you think?

Hi Janet. :-)

Please, please accept my heartfelt apologies. I'm still trying to get used to the features here on Ipernity and I've only just read your comment on this photo. Firstly, thank you for your compliment, and secondly, to answer your queries, the larvae get all the moisture they need from the leaves. Just keep fresh and as dry as possible paper towel or tissue on the bottom of the box and that will be fine in the case of nearly all species one might breed. The fact that the caterpillars are in a sealed plastic container will in itself be an assurance to you that there is at least a small amount of humidy inside. :-)
