International Bomber Command Centre

International Bomber Command Centre
The panels arranged in circles around the monument are inscribed with almost 58,000 names there no ranks or awards all are equal, there is a small hole against each name so relatives can leave a poppy. The site was chosen for the monument because of the distant view of Lincoln Cathedral because returning crews would be looking for the landmark to know they were nearly home. The height of the monument is the wingspan of a Lancaster Bomber. I found an inscription with my surname I looked it up he died 19 August 1943 aged 19

Mariagrazia Gaggero, Nouchetdu38, Berny, and 12 other people have particularly liked this photo

Did you place a poppy in the space of your namesake, Peter?

Lovely image of a beautiful memorial Peter.
I've come across a couple of Mepsteads, one at the National Memorial Arboretum in the Midlands and another at the French National WW1 Memorial Wall. Both were distant cousins but it's still quite a jolt isn't it?

Maybe children should be encouraged to do it or even a random name it might help them to understand the reality

What a lovely idea to have a hole for a poppy beside each name! It looks beautiful against the blue sky.

I think they need a system so that visitors can leave a donation for a poppy at any time of the year and then it is put in place for Remembrance Day. The centre only opened in January the Peace Gardens are still work in progress, you can also visit the exhibition hall
