whn - Whitehaven
Folder: WHITEHAVEN
A collection or perhaps a selection of images related to Whitehaven and the surrounding area, presented in a random fashion.
.
.
After a break between March 2020 and April 2023, the latter part largely self-imposed, during the Covid-19 Pandemic, we have re-started regular visits to Whitehaven, and the Miller-Fifer ...
whn - trawler at dusk
When walking on the beach, this trawler was seen to be moored against the North Wall / Pier of the harbour at Whitehaven. No idea why they hadn't gone into the sea lock, but they landed something, the crew also loaded provisions (we think). Left quite early the next day.
BDD - come and play
Ben is waiting for someone to play with him. Standing on the outer harbour beach with an ebbing tide and very bright winter sunshine, despite which, it is very cold !
BDD - icy sand
The white patches are actually ice / hoar frost on the sand of the outer harbour beach. Yes, it is still very cold and crisp, especially in the shade..
whn - wsba - mass sailing 2
Seems like most of the WSBA were out at sea today.
.
This was the weekend of "Bart's Bash".
par / whn - facing the sea
The cannon is "Big Tom" and dates from the John Paul Jones raid era of Whitehaven's history. It was originally sited much nearer sea level.
What I didn't really see when I was framing this image was the detail on the rock formation, but the "rock face" sort of jumped out at me afterwards. An example of pareidolia.

Another view of the low level of sand in the outer harbour, Whitehaven on 15th January 2017. (2 of 2 images).
whn - old window
Harbour master's house / office and lookout tower (listed buildings) with the setting sun reflecting off the upstairs window; and looking as though the room is occupied.
whn - redness point; 11jan2017
whn - thin ice
whn - west ice
The still waters of West Strand looking towards the Sea Lock.
It was cold last night, and the ice hasn't yet melted.
whn - Lady M and little M at Whitehaven
Super yacht "Lady M" and her tender "Little M" paid a vist to Whitehaven, she is owned by Russian billionaire Alexei Mordashov and worth £40 million. Whilst the owner's family and guests visited the Lakes, the crew did some chores ... and the rest of us looked her over from the surrounding quays.
She was a remarkably tight fit in the sea lock.
gbw - ice at marina
Not sure if this is clear enough to show it, but there is a film of ice on the water, especially in the nearest zone, which was causing some consternation amongst the seabirds.
whn - cygnet almost fully moutlted
One of the cygnets, hatched last summer, has only a few juvenile" feathers left to moult into full adult plumage.
TiG - 37409 Lord Hinton
37409 - Lord Hinton, at Whitehaven. About to set off southwards - in push mode - for Barrow.
One of the class 37s that provide the motive power for the push/pull loco-hauled sets. The bars over the windows are protecting passengers - there are some very narrow clearances on this route.
Have a very distinctive sound, detectable all the way across the marina.
whn - BDD - large long branch
Ben has found a particularly long branch, and dragged it down the beach. Far too heavy to throw ! but we did play "tug-of-war" for a while.
gbw - Whitehaven Outer Harbour

Looking out past the piers, from near to the route of the coal incline (2015)
.
I need to re-take this view, as some of the "derelict" buildings have been removed (By 2018)
By spring 2023 a carbuncle {water sports centre} is being built - about where the timber "demountables" are in this view.
Additionally, I believe the "pit wheel" has disappeared, I know the support frame was in need of repair a few years ago.
WHN - Lowca iron
Probably one of the smallest products from the Lowca foundry - a small flat iron. Being cast Iron, it would hold the heat and the weight would help smooth the item being pressed or ironed.
