Longstone Lighthouse - from where Grace Darling and her father set out - in a storm - to row a small, open boat [a local design known as a coble - say it with a long O] to rescue people stranded on Big Harcar Rock who had escaped from the wreck of the PS Forfarshire in 1838. Since 1990 runs on automated systems using solar panels and LEDs as the light source. e2a : for further details - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longstone_Lighthouse

olb - solent

20 Jul 2008 475
A retired ex-RNLI 48ft Solent class lifeboat. Seen on the Caledonian Canal. Although wanted to note her name at the time (2008) I was not able to do so (but I've found another shot, which gives it). I thought that this was a 46'/49' Watson, but as a discussion with another lifeboat enthusiast I had determined, it is a Solent.....sorry, my mistake!

On display in the old boathouse in Poole is "Thomas Kirk Wright" a 32' "Surf class" lifeboat. The propulsion is a form of 'water jets'. Built in 1938 and served at Poole until 1963. . . After a request, a few other images of ON811 have been uploaded into a separate set..

olb - Chieftan at Wells next the Sea

25 Nov 2011 303
Liverpool class "The Chieftan" running trips at Wells-next-the-sea. (sorry the image is a bit grainy) The route back to the quay is somewhat winding at low tide. She was the station boat at Barmouth between 1949 and 1982, launching through an archway under the Camdrian Coast railway line. She has now been restored by her new owners (2011) and is based at Bristol, in the Floating Harbour.
