NSR 127 (NSRRSRT)

The North Staffordshire Railway Rolling Stock Restoration Trust (aka The NSRRSRT - based at the Foxfield Railway) have been progressing the restoration of their "Heritage Train" to be formed from 4-wheel 'Knotty' coaches (including NSR61 and 127). NSRRSRT have been working on NSR61 for some time, and whilst doing so decided to apply for some major funding. They obtained a significant grant from the Staffordshire Environmental Fund. As a result SRR have been commissioned to return NSR127 to operational condition. The Trust have provided a modified waggon underframe and we will work on the body, which was built to Diagram 12 in the period 1881 to 1907, further research may reveal the exact date.

The first few images are of the delivery to Haltwhistle, and the next group will show the condition of the carriage as received. Once the coach has been assessed, the next uploads will show the work in progress.

Work has started with the removal of the old side cills, in preparation for installing their replacement. This is being done in sections, for ease of handling and to maintain the stability of the carriage. Some additional support will be provided to maintain the timbers in their correct positions as work proceeds.
The replacement cill sections have been cut to length including joints, the frame mortices drilled / cut as required and the holes treated against fungal and pest infestations. The side and cill sections have been installed.
The replacement frame for the end which had a door inserted whilst the coach was at Ecton has been dry erected into the new cill. The joints in this timber have also been chemically treated.
After inserting extra supports, a side module has been extracted for repair "on the bench" - initially it has been cleaned and sanded, this has been followed by a number of minor repairs prior to the major repairs of replacing the lower ends of the uprights. A second, third and fourth modules have also begun this process. (further additional supports have been inserted). The repairs to the frame of the first side module have been completed, it has been primed and test fitted to the replacement cill. This production line is now finishing work on the fifth and sixth side modules - and is about to transfer to the corner sections.
Both "gable" ends frames are under repair, and work is underway to refit the supports before planking the floor......
All six side modules are now replaced as "Final Dry Fit" also both "gable ends" are repaired. Two of the corner modules have been repaired and are now dry fitted with the remaining pair "on the bench" undergoing repairs. The floor supports are all installed and both layers of the floor planks have had a test fit.

Concurrently with the repairs to the carriage, the droplights and doors are being constructed from new timber as a sub-project.

The timber for the seats, bulkheads and interior panelling has now arrived, and some more machining will be done shortly, before dry fitting and assembly takes place. These have now been varnished and dry fitted....

Some undercoat has also been applied....and the new roof has been dry fitted, Doors are being built......they are now hung. Fixed glazing has been installed, the window beads are in the process of being painted, then they will be fixed..

The painting process is well advanced, and some gloss has been applied. The roof canvas has been bonded down and had the appropriate coats of paint applied. Working up to the final gloss coats, followed by applying the transfers.
The final touches will be applied after the body and underframe are re-united.

The carriage returned to the Foxfield Railway, by means of a low-loader from Milner's Haulage, on Wednesday 21st August, 2013. Some images of the move and back at Blythe Bridge have been uploaded. NSR127 is currently on display in their Museum.

The Knotty Coach Trust had the official launch of their heritage train on 7th August, and the first weekend in public service was 9 and 10th August 2014.
