twb[23] - Herd Groyne lighthouse

twb[23] - Herd Groyne lighthouse
Lighthouse on the Herd Groyne, South Shields, as viewed from the Fish Quay, North Shields.
I have heard it described as looking a bit like an escapee from a bad 1950s Sci-fi movie.

The groyne itself was built in 1861-67 to protect the Herd Sands [Littlehaven Beach].

The lighthouse was built in 1882, the upper hexagonal section, including the lantern, is made of wood and corrugated iron and perches on a dozen steel legs. It was repainted in 2014. The light displays directional colours to assist navigation - there are plenty of rocks and wrecks nearby.
