twb[23] - North Pier
Built 1854 to 1895 as a breakwater to protect the mouth of the River Tyne - at least partially to create a safe[-ish] anchorage for naval and merchant vessels. Stone built, extending some 900 yards and tipped with a lighthouse.
note : rebuilt by 1909 after storm damage in 1898.
