dss - Tower of Refuge {1 of 12}
No.1
A group of small fishing boats, rafted / moored together. The tide is out, so I doubt that there is much water under them.
Location is Douglas Bay, not far from the Harbour. The picturesque structure on the island in the background is the "Tower of Refuge" - built in 1832 under the auspices of Sir William Hillary.
The wreck of the RMS St George on St Mary's Isle two years before prompted the scheme to build a refuge. It was partially funded by public subscriptions, with Sir William covering the additional funds needed to cover the remaining costs of the architect & builder.
