hin[22]ccc - Barge House & archway
The archway is over the "canal" - Pickerell Fleet - connecting the moats around Caister Castle with the R.Bure, which was used initially to transport stone & other building materials into the castle. Later, Sir John Fastolfe and some of his household and their guests would have disembarked inside the walls. The Pickerell Fleet is no longer navigable as it is choked with silt and weeds.
