clch - leaded petrol use, global map
The global decline in the use of leaded petrol, 2002 to 2012, with Algeria being the last country to ban the fuel, in 2021.
This ban was carried out to prevent further pollution from increasing environmental lead levels.
Leaded petrol refers to an additive [tetra-ethyl lead] used to reduce "pinking" or pre-ignition, normally in car engines, allowing the use of a lower "octane" petrol.
Modern "high octane" or "high E" [E stands for ethanol] petrol can damage historic car and motorcycle engines, if used without suitable precautionary modifications.
