The Indian variant [B.1.617.2] was circulating in NW England - specifically in Bolton and then in Blackburn with Darwen. The rise in cases was concentrated among younger, un-vaccinated adults (and children). The over 60s had a reasonable level of protection form vaccination.

This spread of the "Indian" variant was detected by surge testing and somewhat countered by encouragement to get vaccinated.
