After having looked at the records for the flow rates on the River South Tyne at the Featherstone gauge - it would seem there was a peak flow event ...
The highest level ever recorded at the River South Tyne at Featherstone is 2.72m, reached on Saturday 18th May 2013 at 1:00pm.
I think the entrained debris in such a flood would be the likely cause of the demise of this bridge, the flooding was probably due to heavy rain and possibly melting of late season snow off the moors
