Cartoon of Darwin and Emile Littre (1801-1881) a French lexicographer and philosopher. Littre was disliked for his materialist philosophy, but the connection with Darwin was tenuous

He is breaking a loop called credulity, and aiming for a second loop called error, superstition and ignorance but they are both portrayed as monkeys. I am not sure if the cartoonist intended this to be in support of Darwin or against him, it's ambiguous. Darwin is one of my heroes, but I am not at all aware of Emile Littre.
