Mont St.-Michel At the summit of a 250-foot cone of rock rising out of the sea and accessible only at low tide, Mont St.-Michel combined fortified castle and monastery. Thirteenth-century monarchs considered it crucial to their power in northwestern France, and it played a decisive role in French Defences against the English during the Hundred Years War. The abbots so planned the architecture that monastic life went on undisturbed by military activity (Mark Sheridan OSB)
