John Cosgrove was the ‘Japan’s’ Chief Engineer, Captain Warsaw would occasionally have Mr. Cosgrove take him through the Japan’s engine and furnace room spaces. Her sidewheels were driven by a vertical beam engine with a cylinder 105 inches in diameter and a 12 foot stroke. The enormous side wheels were attached to a shaft weighing 30 tons. Each sidewheel cost approximately $20,000, weighed 74 tons, and was 120 feet in circumference. The furnace room was also 17 feet below the water line and operated 24 furnaces. ` Page 102
