. . . Darwin had been aware of all this since his Edinburgh days and also knew that scientists of the past had been persecuted and forced to recant. The conclusions he had reached on the origin of man raised especially sensitive issues. ‘Man in his arrogance thinks himself a great work worthy in the interposition of the deity. More humble and I believe truer to consider him created from animals,’ he entered in one of his notebooks during the spring of 1838; and a little later: ‘I will never allow that because there is a chasm between man . . . and animals that mans has different origin’. Bold though his thoughts, were he recognized that in any public statement caution was necessary. Thus in another notebook we find the entry: ‘To avoid stating how far I believe in Materialism, say only that emotions, instincts degrees of talent, which are hereditary are so because brain of child resembles parent stock.’ By attributing an animal inheritance only to children, he hoped it implications for grown men and women might be avoided. ` Page 213
