. . . Mara remained a force to reckon with. He continued to whisper to the Buddha about all the fame and fortune he deserved, about the pointlessness of his personal sacrifice. The Buddha had to deal with his own ego even after his enlightenment. This is an aspect of Buddhist thought that dovetails nicely with psychotherapy. Relaxing the ego’s grip makes the experience of pure awareness possible, but the experience of pure awareness makes it clear what work still needs to be done on the ego. After the ecstasy, it is said, comes the laundry. ~ Page 7

Yunmen also criticises holding on to “not being attached to anything,” or to the one who is not holding on:

The other religion’s adherent answered “What I regard as essential is not to be taken in by anything.”

Master Yunmen said in place of the Buddha: “Your turn!” ~ Page 65

In true non-duality, all chains and attachments are removed, be it to “supreme wisdom” or “delusion,” Buddha” or Mara,” “sacred or “profane,” “something”: or nothing.” Thus Master Linji states

A clear eyed follower of the Way bears both Buddha and (the opposing force, the demon) Mara. as long as you love the sacred and hate the secular you float in the sea of life-and-death ~ Page 65
