Battista Agnese, Venice, 1544. Magellan’s circumnavigation, under the guidance of the twelve winds of antiquity, is commemorated. North America takes shape, but the form of the Asian landmass and the breadth of the Pacific remain uncertain.

The human cost of Magellan’s expedition was horrendous. Like most of hi shipmates, Magellan fortified his life in the effort. To h8is family in Spain and to his relatives in Protugal, it brought grief and ruin. The expedition’s principal objective, to bring back proof that Moluccas lay on the Spanish side of the extended line of demarcation, was a scientific failure and diplomatic disaster. The small profit realized from the sale of the Victoria’s cargo could never be construed as a reasonable return on investment. Yet, for all these worldly failures, Magellan’s voyage represents a triumph of human spirit. For this, and for its contribution to man’s knowledge of the true size of his world and to the extent of its oceans, his achievement stands unparalleled in history. In centuries to come, the memory of Magellan’s magnificent exploration will surely continue to inspire men to expand their horizon into the unfathomed depth of space. ~ 244
