AS a postdoc, Engleman worked on a sprawling computer stimulation of how neurons in the human brain interact. Time perception was not on his radar until he encountered the flash0lag effect, one of the lesser-known sensory illusions that have engaged psychologists and cognitive scientists over the years. In his office he showed me a copy of ‘The Great Book of Optical Illusions” by Al Seckel, which described hundreds of illusions, including one of the oldest, the ‘motion aftereffect,” sometimes called the waterfall effect. Watch a waterfall for a minute or so and then look away ; everything in sight will now seem to be crawling upward. “In physics, motion is defined as a change in position over time,” Eagleman said “But it’s not that way in the brain: you can have motion without change in position.” ~ Page 119 ~ Excerpt - "WHY TIME FLIES" Author Alan Burdick
