According to the court theologian Bosseut, the clergy at the coronation of Louis XIV in Rheims Cathedral asked God to cause the splendors of the French court to fill all who beheld it with awe. God subsequently granted that prayer. In the reign of Louis XIV (164301715), the longest in European history, the French monarchy reached the peak of absolutist development. In the magnificence of the court, in his absolute power, in the brilliance of the culture over which he presided and which permeated all the Europe, and in his remarkably long life, the “Sun King” dominated his age. No wonder the scholars have characterized the second half of the seventeenth century as the “Grand Century,” the “Age of Magnificence.” And echoing the eighteenth-century philosopher Voltaire, the “Age of Louis XIV” ~ page 512
