Perhaps the clearest manifestation of that horizontal shortening is the wide belt of folded rock along the easter side of the Andes. . . . . This same style of deformation built a fold-and-thrust belt along the eastern flank of th eCanadian Rocky Mountains and another that makes the Appalachian Mountains of Pennsylvania, Virginia, and neighbouring states. The layers in such folds that are most resistant to erosion often form ridges and therefore a ‘ridge and valley’ landscape; the Pennsylvania Turnpike highway uses tunnels to pass through such ridges. ` pag 97
