Einstein

Einstein
An human being is a part of the whole called by us “the universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest -- a kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison to us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection of a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of understanding and compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. ~ Einstein

Albert Einstein would soon explain how an ounce of radium emitted four thousand calories an hour almost indefinitely. For two years he had been mulling over his momentous conclusion that all matter in the universe is a repository of enormous, latent energy. And in 1905 he revealed this secret of creation in six strokes of the pen, the equation E = mc2

The formula implied that mass in frozen energy, and predicted that converting a small amount of mass would release an enormous amount of energy -- as evnetually happened with the atomic bomb. Though Einstein neither revealed how to split the atom nor suggested the possibility, his formula would be used to uncover the mystery of how, through nuclear reactions, the sun and stars radiate light and heat for billions of years. Einstein also noted that this incredible energy was unknown until the Curies discovered radium. ~ Page 72
