A view from the tram

Having abandoned a rainy Southport I travelled by train to Manchester Airport before returning to the city centre by tram as I had not previously used this route. The tram traverses some sections along the public roads where it jostles with cars for space. This is the crossing of Barlow Moor Road on the outskirts of Chorlton.

Getting going again

After watching this train pass lower down the line ( see earlier image ) I realised that it was slipping badly and from the noises bouncing off the hills it soon became clear that it had stalled. Sensing another photo opportunity I descended the hill I was on and ran down the snow covered road to Shenbutong where, rather breathlessly, 17 minutes later, I was just in time to make this shot as the train was accelerating away. Well worth the long run.

Lingquan (Jalainur) power station

The sun sets behind the 600Mw Lingquan power station at Jalainur in the Mongolian Autonomous Region of China. It is operated by the China Huaneng Group which is the largest electricity producer in China with a market share of just less than 14%. The steam trains that served the nearby opencast mine and several deep mines have been replaced with diesels and the opencast mine is now closed.
