Lyveden New Bield Northamptonshire 2nd January 2022

Lyveden New Bield Northamptonshire 2nd January 2022
The historic ruin that is not actually a ruin. Lyveden New Bield as the strange spelling suggests was a new build whose construction for Sir Thomas Tresham began in 1604 but was never actually finished - it never had a proper roof for example.

Info from the National Trust site:-

Sir Thomas Tresham died in 1605 following decades of religious persecution, his once vast wealth having been severely depleted. His son Francis Tresham inherited the estate, but within the same year, along with his cousins Catesby and Wintour, he became involved in the Gunpowder Plot.

After this, Francis's son Lewis Tresham, a spendthrift, lost the remaining family wealth. The estate was eventually sold following the death of his son in 1643.

Thanks Jaap. It's a strange place designed as a lodge rather than a house but was never lived in.
