A Peak Class diesel is working hard on a Northeast to Southwest expess (1V76 to Penzance) as it crosses the viaduct over the canal & Bristol Road in Birmingham. Queen Elizabeth Hospital forms the backdrop.

By 1975 the Midland Railway station, opened in 1876, was unmanned & uncared for. The glass in the platform awning had gone & the buildings were derelict. It was demolished and replaced by a modern structure a few years later.

Certainly not a pretty shot, but a great "moment in time" picture. There is a stark contrast between what the station architecture HAD BEEN, and what BR let it become. The same applies to the loco, a fine machine but absolutely filthy and belching clag. Did lack of maintenance really save them any money in the end? Mind you, I'd much rather have a Peak, with a grubby MkI or MkII set, on an NE/SW marathon than the torture chamber that is the Voyager. I wonder, had 1970s maintenance been up to today's standard, could these trains have lasted longer?

Thanks. Give me a Peak any day, whatever the condition! The rebuilt modern station has no character at all of course.
