Embsay appears to be a good site to get an 'old' photo.

Why are there arches in the wall of the platform? Was there a signal box there previously?

Looking at the images on Google Earth, the station appears to be built on the side of a hill. To the left of this photo there are a couple of sidings at a lower level. Both platforms, as far as I can see, have these arches all the way along. They are probably a way of providing structural support to the platforms, rather than allowing anything to pass underneath.
