I made a very time consuming rail journey to Burton on Trent yesterday. What I could drive in 1½ hours took 3½ hours and required four separate trains! This 9 coach Pendelino, seen approaching across Stockport viaduct, whisked me off to Stoke from where I endured the thrills of trains filled with football supporters and stuffed with empty bottles, glasses, and general detritus. It was not an edifying sight.

Blue rubber octopus, , , have particularly liked this photo

Let the train take the strain! And they urge us to use public transport.

That's discouraging. Here in the U.S. everyone assumes that UK/Europe has got the train as transportation worked out and attractive to use. From what I keep coming across in readings, it seems that's not the case at least in the UK.

There was a time when we were quite good at railways but that was long ago. Since Thatcher we've been heading toward a model of private operation truly amazing in its convoluted inefficiency and immense expense.

That was my understanding, that the Thatcher privatization had resulted in a very botched system with little coordination. I dropped plans to include Wales in a visit to Europe this Spring partly because it seemed that the only reasonable option was renting a car and I didn't want to deal with that.

It's a shame you didn't consider travelling by coach. Modern services are generally comfortable and sometimes quite amazingly cheap if you book carefully. Oh well, maybe next time?

I'll figure it out for next time. I have joint problems which make sitting in one place painful, so trains are much preferable since I can get up and move around.
