An uplifting experience

An uplifting experience
The Strépy-Thieu boat lift was designed during the Canal du Centre's modernisation program in order to replace a system of two locks and four 16-metre lifts dating from 1888 to 1919. Building started in 1981 and was completed in 2002 after which 1350 tonne standard barges were able to pass between the Meuse and Scheldt rivers. It is the tallest boat lift in the world with a rise of 73.15 metres.

They would need something like this if they want to restore the Mon-Brec Canal from Pontnewydd to Newport; given that the only traffic would be a very limited number of hire boats I can't see it happening!

Quite a wonder, I've never seen such a lift. There's an interesting Youtube of it in operation:

Barges and canals are still use for freight?

In mainland Europe they still are heavily used whilst in the UK there is very little commercial traffic on inland waterways these days.

We do quite a bit of shipping fairly far inland on various rivers in the U.S., many with lock systems. But I don't think we have any such actual lifts (hopefully others will know).
