Danes Moss tramway

Danes Moss tramway
Action on the Danes Moss peat tramway in Macclesfield. This 'railtour' took place on 26th October 1962 and was punctuated by several derailments on the grassy tracks. Here the passengers scramble back aboard after rectifying a derailment whilst the motive power patiently watches. The gauge was 3ft 0ins and the motive power was named 'Star'. In the background can be glimpsed Macclesfield Moss signal box and wagons on the sidings adjacent to the building belonging to the British Peat Moss Litter Company Ltd which built and operated the tramway.

I am very grateful to Alan Brackenbury for giving me permission to post his photograph and consult his notes made on the day of the railtour.

I remember when the Danes Moss was being worked for its Peat, all the tracks and the huge black building, inside it were spare axles and wheel on the lower floor but not much higher up, it had its own branch line which was short but meant it was important enough to have loaded quantities of cut and dried peat. There were lots of piles of cut Peat stacked but spaced out so wind would blow though to assist its drying. There were many drainage dykes taking water away, some of which would have ended up in the River Bollin. Over the years since it ceased its cutting of Peat the Refuse Tip on Congleton Road slowly encroached over the Danes Moss and filled many of the Dykes, The tracks were left for many years but I think they were taken for scrap at some point. As for Star and another horse back over the main railway line over the crossing but before the Canal there was a paddock with a wooden stable which has now been reclaimed by nature.
