Stokroos - Hollyhock

Stokroos - Hollyhock

Saturday Self Challenge: From the garden

The Common Hollyhock is in The Netherlands originally a gardenplant. Because of its popularity and of a warmer climate this species is now growing everywhere in cities. It is growing easily between pavement and wall. Here a purple-red variety between the pavement and a pillar of the drawbridge in my street.

These dark colours are gorgeous, light pink are more common.

Your low angle on this really shows off the contrast of plant and structure. And it's great to have that rich flower color in contrast to the gray wall and sidewalk.

We actually have a Tall Wild Hollyhock that is native to the Willamette Valley here in Oregon. I've don't know if I've ever seen anyone plant one in their garden!

My mom taught me how to make a doll with the blossoms when I was young - something she used to do as a little girl in the eastern U.S.. You take an unopened bud and one open blossom - push the stem of the bud into the bottom of the blossom and turn downwards to the blossolm is the skirt!

Thanks for adding to my group 'plants vs structures' - found and enjoyed this photo there.
