Bel-etage

Bel-etage
Saturday Self Challenge: Trap

Saturday Self Challenge: Stairs

In Amsterdam many old houses do not have a ground floor. A stairs lead to the main floor: the bel-étage or piano nobile. As the French or Italian name suggests, it is usually the most beautiful floor with the greatest height. One would have a view over the hustle and bustle of the street (people, carts, horses). It was also the place for the richer people, and even in poor neighbourhoods like here such a difference could be made. (Nothing has changed really, and these days you need a lot of money to buy here.)

The floor or floors above and under the main floor may have their own stairs and front door, depending on the internal lay-out which may have been changed in the course of time. The left semi-basement has its own stairs, the right does not have one these days.

Nice picture of both double entrances with their differences. I have rented a Bel-étage in th 80's when I had two ships in a shipyard in Ridderkerk... at first I lived there but was bored in the evening after work, so I preferred to rent in Amsterdam and come and go everyday!

Very elegant buildings. I'd love to own bel-étage of the house on the left of the photo.

I love the contrast in the look of each staircase, Diederik. Individuality among the uniformity!
