Standbeeld - Statue

Standbeeld - Statue
Zie hier: flic.kr/p/2g9DGTi of www.ipernity.com/doc/299737/48722906

The statue of Anne Frank on the Merwedeplein in Amsterdam. She, her sister and parents lived here at number 37-2 from 1933/1934 to 1942. Here Anne started to write in her diary.
The statue represents that Anne is casting a very last glance to her house before she went into hiding in the Achterhuis (‘Backhouse’, The Secret Annex) at the Prinsengracht. The house she is leaving is on the second floor behind the tree in the middle. In front of the house there are ‘stolpersteine’ (stumbling stones) for the Frank family. Anne watching out of the window (1941): www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hvtXuO5GzU

One of my grandfathers was director of a school in the north of the Netherlands from 1939 to 1945. Only recently I found out that a Jewish teacher worked at that school. On one day it was required by the German occupation that he had to move to Amsterdam. An ominous sign...

This week it was 75 years ago the Allied forces landed in Normandy, next week it is 90 years ago Anne Frank was born.

What a poignant memorial to a life tragically cut short. Thank you for sharing the backstory of this statue, Diederik.

A very moving tribute and statue. We visited Amsterdam a very long time ago and I did start to read a book about Anne. I wasn't able to read the whole book and I must return to the book and try to read it all. Beautiful and moving music.

Thank you, Diederik, for posting to Sight and Sound : Pictures & Music

A wonderful choice for our challenge this week, Diederik. This is so moving. I love the video of her too and had never seen it.

The music I know well and learned to play on my flute. I could never bring myself to see the movie though. Too painful.
