I guess we have ALL taken similar photos to this one! I love those feathers.

African Wild Dogs

African Wild Dogs are also known as Painted Dogs. Their habits are similar to those of the Wolf. Their numbers have been declining in the wild in Africa and they are now the rarest large carnivore in the whole of Africa. The Calgary Zoo has a pack of six males, named Watson, Waldo, Weasley, Warner, Wilson and Wheaton.

Peahen

I think one can use the name "Peacock" for both male and female or else call this a "Peahen". I hadn't realized there is an irridescent sheen on the female's feathers. Very beautiful in her own way, despite being far less colourful than the male. I remember seeing one in the wild many, many years ago while travelling on a train in India.

Owl Butterfly

These Owl Butterflies are native to Central and South America. Their name is derived from the eyespots on their wings, which are used to scare away predators. This was photographed at the Calgary Zoo Butterfly House, which has recently been renovated and looks beautiful.

Mute Swan

Rather a graceful bird. We don't get them in the wild in Calgary, which meant a trip to the Zoo.

Tropical plant

I wasn't sure whether to crop the bright pink petals from the bottom, left corner but then the photo didn't look quite right that way either!

Room for one more?

There is a beautiful indoor garden in downtown Calgary, called the Devonian Gardens. They have small ponds, a huge variety of tropical plants, sculptures, and these turtles. A very enjoyable place for people who work downtown to go to over their lunch break. Note later: this photo has been used by Schmap!! for Schmap for iPhone and iPod.

Rice Paper butterfly

A pretty typical photo taken at the Calgary Zoo Butterfly House. It seems that this is a common find in butterfly houses. I'm not sure where it originates. I love the name of this butterfly.

Blue & Brown Clipper

At least, I believe this is the correct name for this butterfly. I don't know if it's a tropical one or if it appears down in the USA. All Butterfly Houses seem to have similar ones on display. Native Location: Philippine islands.
