Thinking about the big leap

Thinking about the big leap
This photo was taken on 27 April 2014 in Fish Creek Park, somewhere between one and three days before this oldest Great Horned Owl owlet flew for the very first time, to the nearest tree. I don't know anyone who witnessed this fledging, so I don't know if it took place in the daytime or at night. Last year at this time, a number of us were so lucky to be standing there when the oldest flew. It was starting to get dark and we were all holding our breath and hoping the new fledgling would make it to the tree - which it did, but low down on the tree trunk, not a branch. Not one single person took any photos, we were just so in awe at witnessing the event. Those are the best moments in nature, when getting a photo isn't the most important thing!

The weather forecast for today was rain and snow, so I decided to not go on a birding outing east if the city. Guess what - the sun was shining when I got up! I've lost count of how may trips I didn't go on this winter because bad weather was forecast and instead, the sun was shining. I would have had to drive right across the city to the meeting place, too, which I never like doing.

, have particularly liked this photo
