A splash of colour in the forest

A splash of colour in the forest
A colourful mushroom, that I think is a Russula sp., seen along the forest trail leading to the overlook at Peyto Lake (off the Icefields Parkway / Highway 93, Banff National Park). Any kind of bright colour in the forest is always a welcome sight - purple, blue, red, orange, yellow : )

LeapFrog has particularly liked this photo

Thanks, Art! Yes, I think it has to be some kind of Russula, but not sure exactly what. What is really missing in Calgary, is a Mycologist, who could come with us when we visit various places! Mosses, Lichens and Liverworts are pretty much covered by my specialist friends, but for fungi, there is no one, unfortunately.

A great photo of this Russula sp. The colors in Russula are water soluble so change with the amount of rainfall. ID is usually quite difficult. The Russula's you see in all field guides are only a fraction of the species out there and there are so many look a likes.
