Sleepy baby
Several of us went with Don Stiles round his Mountain Bluebird route (SW of Calgary), on 24 June 2013. Don has been a dedicated monitor for about 30 years. This young Bluebird was out of the nest box (being held by one of the ladies in the group) along with its five siblings, to be banded. This is an outing that I look forward to each year.

Yes, great care is taken to handle these babies correctly. I remember someone asking a few years ago, on one of Don's annual outings, whether the adults ever abandon their banded babies. In 30 years, Don said he has never had a single incident where the adults didn't return to the nest box. The parents are always perched nearby, sometimes with a beakful of insects, and they fly to the box immediately and continue to feed the little ones. I think I'm remembering correctly that the birds don't go by smell, but by sight, so they don't recognize human scent from handling.
