Great Ash Sphinx Moth

Great Ash Sphinx Moth
A friend phoned a couple of days ago to say that he had found a huge moth on the side of his building. We went over so that I could see and photograph it. This photo was taken with flash and so has changed the grey to brown. The next photo is the accurate colouring. It is a Great Ash Sphinx Moth, about 3" long. Dr. Ted Pike said in an e-mail that "They are found in Calgary, but not often seen (they are nocturnal). They do not seem to be abundant judging from how rarely they turn up at my moth trap. It is not, however, our largest moth. That honour is reserved for the Glovers Silk Moth."
