They are call “Madonnelle” and are the expression of a profound popular, street devotion that reflects the intensity of the Marian cult .
Their use dates back to ancient Rome, when the Lares Compitales, the pagan deities maybe of Etruscan origin, were entrusted with the protection of all street intersections.
