SATURDAY SELF-CHALLENGE

DEEP DEPTH OF FIELD

My understanding of deep depth-of-field is that you need to try and get as much of the scene, from front to back, in focus. I figured that an aperture of f/18 and focussing at a point just beyond the gate would be a good starting point :-) I am not at all sure if I have succeeded!

Having looked at Val's link again I am wondering if I should, perhaps, have gone for f/32.

Also, I am sure a lot of lenses have a sweet spot of, probably, around f/8 or f/11. And at, say, f32 I guess the quality may suffer a bit.

I could, of course, be talking jibberish :-)))

Anyway, in the 'Discussion' section Kenny's comment about being able, in the olden days, to see the area of focus by looking at the lens markings brings back memories of this very helpful function :-)) Thanks, Kenny.

This is a farm within Stowe Landscape Gardens. But, for the purposes of 'Sight and Sound' we will have to imagine this is a 'Ranch' and then I can choose "Fun Ranch Boogie" by Albert Lee :-)

I think you're on to something with each lens having a "sweet spot", Roger. I couldn't get any of my images to be all in focus at higher f stops with the lens I was using. I had to settle for somewhere around f11. I read that focusing 1/3 of the way into the image would get everything in focus as well but the didn't work for me either. Hopefully we all learned a lot this week though. :)

This is a wonderful image. I can see detail throughout even with the contrasting light and shade. Nicely done! A fantastic hoppin' tune too!

This was a good learning experience. I think my 19mm prime might have been a better choice this week. Maybe next time. :)

The highest f stops usually suffer from what is called diffraction blur, that's why most lenses are at their sharpest somewhere in the middle.

Danke, Gudrun! A great reminder and great info. I forgot about diffraction. Now I think I know why I have such a bad time with some of my lenses at the higher f stops. :)

Very nice image Roger. I found this challenge probably more confusing that it should’ve been. I really like your subject. Tells a story and makes you want to know more

You succeeded perfectly under rather difficult lighting conditions! The red letterbox is a cool eyecatcher:-)
Wide angle always helps to get more of the scene in focus and f/18 seems a good aperture. f/32 probably wouldn't have been as good because of diffraction issues.

If you went to f 32 you would have required a longer exposure which exposes the photo to noise. This is nice and sharp, good use of a quality lens.
