Washoe Valley & New Washoe City
|
|
Looking east from the top of Zephyr Run on Slide Mountain, in the Mt. Rose Ski Area. US 395 is the prominent divided road running diagonally up to the right toward this side of the valley.
Snow rolls

Near Lassen Peak National Park, California, off a cross-country ski trail. The outer layer of snow on the slope has peeled back under gravity to wrap around into a roll. These are pretty common in mountain country. They require a slope and an uppermost layer of snow that isn't well bonded to those below. Those are, of course, the same conditions that lead to avalanches!
Pogonip from Slide Mountain.

Icy valley fog in Eagle and Carson Valleys. "Pogonip" can also mean the thick hoarfrost the fog deposits. It's evidently a corruption of a Paiute word. Taken from off Zephyr Run on Slide Mountain, Mt. Rose ski area. It was warmer up here than down there! Washoe County, Nevada, USA.

Another view from Ridge Run at the Diamond Peak ski area. Incline Village, Nevada, USA. The snow coverage was patchy that year--note the bare spot just ahead. The prominent peninsula in the middle distance is Stateline Point--it marks the California state line.

Nevada, USA. Off Zephyr Run, Mt. Rose Ski area. Nevada living up to its Spanish name!
