Folder: Geology
"Playa" is literally "beach" in Spanish, but in the deserts of southwestern North America also means a dry lake bed. Presumably it's a Mexican-Spanish usage imported into English.

Coyote on the Alvord Desert
This coyote evidently strayed onto the playa and then didn't know where to go. It appeared to be in distress, as it hardly paid attention to us altho it came within a few dozen yards. It was headed for the playa edge on the west side so hopefully found water there.

Lost coyote, Alvord Desert
Another view, still headed to the west side of the playa. I wondered if it was fooled by the mirage? In any case, there are springs on that side of the playa so it should be able to find water.
