View from the Trail

Looking north along the White Mountains from near the top of the trail to White Mountain Peak, California, USA. Not too many trees, but it is in Inyo National Forest! White Mountain Peak has an elevation of 14,252 feet (4,344 m) and is the third highest peak in California. It is the highest point of the White Mountains, which lie in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada and so are considerably drier.

Looking up from the summit trail. We're on a ridge over 11K feet (~3350 m) here, but the summit is over 14K feet (~4260 m)! So we still have a ways to go. White Mountain Peak is the highest point in the White Mountains (the ones in California), and the third-highest peak in California. The White Mountains are in the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada immediately to the west, so the range is very dry despite its elevation.
