An interesting series on this sinkhole, Steve. It's interesting that it's formed in such an arid area - I guess the key determinant is having the right geology (and time).

It's unexpected, to be sure. In the surrounding area you can _see_ the gypsum crystals in the soil, and there's even an endangered plant that is tolerant to extreme gypsum levels. Still, to have it dissolve out to this degree is unusual.
