Linotype
Overland Trail Museum, Sterling, Colorado, USA. My grandfather was a printer, and spent many years using one of these machines. As late as the 1980s they were still occasionally used for specialty jobs--I remember looking at one ca. 1985 with him explaining it in loving detail. Obviously he regretted their passing! He didn't spend nearly as much time describing the new computer-driven presses.

They sure revolutionized typesetting! But they were cumbersome, noisy, and not a little dangerous. The lead fumes probably weren't an asset, either!
