One of My Favorite Bristol Trees

This was taken eight years ago. This year the colors have been slow to come in and are only now beginning to show the reds, oranges, and bright yellows that make the landscape so pretty. This tree is at the top of my hill on the corner of Main and Mountain St. HFF friends!

The Dunkin' Donuts Evidence

09 Oct 2023 5 6 75
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: STRIKING A POSE This is 1979 Brattleboro, Vermont. My Auntie Joan, who is visiting from Wales (in the middle, in the white jacket) had heard about Dunkin' Donuts and wanted to see what they were like, so we bought her a box. She also wanted evidence to take back and show friends and relatives in Wales - so here we are, striking a pose, to confirm "the proof". L to R: My boyfriend (husband-to-be), Brian, me, Joan, my friend Cheryl, my Dad, and Cheryl's boyfriend, Gene, in the back. My Dad, Brian, and Gene apparently drinking beer with the donuts. Eww!

Brought forward for the HFF group. Happy weekend, friends! Originally uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: TAKEN UNAWARES in 2019. This is a found photograph from Ferrisburgh, VT, 2012. It's one of quite a few taken in the 1920s - and showing a group (mostly women) who just seem full of life, laughs, and good times.

The Watsons of Newport, Rhode Island

Posted, and not too long ago, (sorry) to my Vintage Miserable Family Group but I'm re-posting to the Vintage Photos Theme Park for the current theme of POLICE OFFICERS, as I apparently have no other examples. I bought this photograph from a woman antique dealer who had grown up in Newport, Rhode Island and knew of this family. She told me that the boy to the left of the mother had the interesting name of "Pardon" Watson. The father was a police officer and we can see him here wearing his badge. It was also a good fit for the "Vintage Miserable Family group" (but spot the lone smiler.) This was cropped to enlarge the details. Below is the original mounted on cardboard.

The Partially Hidden Mother

13 Sep 2023 2 3 51
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: A TABLETOP OR DESKTOP AND THE THINGS ON IT This is a very new acquisition and I got it at the same place I've been buying my glass plate negatives for the past few years. Sadly, they're going out of business in October. I will really miss the friendly, interested couple who owned it - as well as their cool place. They only had a few glass plate negatives left - and I bought them up. This was one of them. The thing about glass plate negatives is, it's sometimes tricky to see what you're getting - because you're just looking at the negative. After years of collecting these, I've learned how to assess the quality and I could see that the baby's face was well out of focus - but what I couldn't make out was why the woman seemed to have no head! There are vintage collectors who focus on the "hidden mother" image, which is exactly that - a mother holding up an infant or young child but hiding herself so that (usually) just her hand is visible. It clearly was not that type, as could make out her apron - but, after, forking out two dollars, and "developing it" on the computer at home, this is the comical image that emerged. And, serendipitously, it turned out to fit perfectly with this week's theme! So, here's a desk with a baby (!), a lamp, a globe, a postal scale, a clock, and lots of paperwork on it - and a semi, "hidden mother" holding the baby next to it!

A Little Bit of a Theme Stretch

15 Sep 2023 3 2 64
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of: SPORTING EVENTS OR COMPETITIONS I seem to have run out of sports themes in our family photos and the ones I buy and collect. No surprise there as we were not big sports fans on either side! So, I'm sliding this one in with a bit of a wink. We were just down in Sunapee, New Hampshire for the week On the way home we stopped at a real old junk store in Newport, N.H. (although I did find a really sweet hand mirror amongst thousand of junky junks!) BUT on the checkout counter was a box marked FREE with some really cool vintage photos - so I picked out a bunch. So... my stretch is the front page of The Argus Champion which has an article on the front proclaiming: 600 Youngsters Hit Sunapee Ski Slopes For Children's Day I believe this is the mid-1950s.

Brought forward for the Vintage Photos Theme Park monthly theme of: BACK TO SCHOOL. This is either the September's term first day of school or the first day of the spring term of 1961. In England, at least then, you could begin school in the Spring term - which went from after Easter until the middle of July (in which case you got a short kindergarten experience) or in the September term where you went for a whole year (I think). Either way, I think this was my brother's first day of school. Pictured left to right: 1st Row: Janet Hall, Diane Hall, Nicholas Lundbech, Ruth Brown, me, Linda Whiting. 2nd Row: Frances Brown, Pauline Cox, Jill Cox Back Row: Sheila Whiting Janet, Diane and Linda are wearing our school (Love Lane) blazer which was royal blue with gold or orange trim. Sheila in the back is wearing the FitzwiMarc blazer which i think was red with a silver trim.

On August 19th we were getting ready to go on vacation, driving down to Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire, and then happily surrounded by family once we got there. The upshot being that I only took two photos that day. So... here they are. I originally chose the second one for the top photo - but ended up with the profile one instead. Was that the better choice? Happy belated World Photography Day, everyone!
