School in the Meester Cornelis Street in Haarlem

Meester Cornelis was a town and fort in the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. Meester Cornelis was named after a 17th Century teacher: master Cornelis van Senen. Meester Cornelis is now a suburb of Jakarta, called Jatinegara.

Willem Bilderdijk lived here

Bilderdijk was a Dutch poet and writer. He was a political conservative. He had a small but dedicated following during his life, after his death his popularity increased. I think that few people read him nowadays. He lived in Leiden, and this plaque can be found on the last house he lived in before he moved to Haarlem. He lived from 1756 to 1831. See this picture for the unveiling of the plaque on March 26, 1938.

Haarlem station is 100 years old this year. It is a beautiful art-deco design. Almost every aspect of the station is designed, down to the tiniest detail, so there is always something to discover.
